It’s been a little while since we’ve had an update on the Colorado Avalanche. Well, I guess that is sort of expected seeing as the Stanley Cup Playoffs are still going on and the Avs are once again not part of that party…
Anyways, there are a few things in the news regarding the Avs, so here are a few tidbits of info:
Colorado in talks with Maple Leafs assistant GM?
The Avalanche front office seems to at least be contemplating looking at themselves in the mirror with this rumor out of Toronto that they asked permission to speak to the Leafs’ assistant GM Kyle Dubas last week. By all indications, the Avs seemed to like the talks with Dubas but according to a report, they were only willing to offer him a parallel type of position to his current post in Toronto, and therefore the Leafs will not let him talk anymore.
Here is the report from Adrian Dater on the situation:
Not at all 100% on this, but: consensus I'm getting is Avs did not come at Dubas with offer to be immediate GM. A post lower than that. (1)
(2) so, Leafs then said no to him leaving. Permission was for him to leave only if he got GM offer. Confusing a bit, yes, but what I hear
So, it doesn’t seem like Sakic is ready to totally relinquish his GM duties. It seems like a bad/unprofessional move to talk to another team’s assistant GM to only offer him the same type of role — however, we do believe it is good news that Sakic knows he needs help. Whether he continues his search for help or not, that is the question we have now.
Dubas is a bright and upcoming name in the league and will no doubt get his chance at being a GM at some point; and it’s encouraging that Sakic is interested in bringing in new blood, but now that this has happened, we don’t really see Dubas coming to Colorado. Talking about a parallel move like this is just another wrong card played by Sakic, and that’s too bad.
Avalanche to get new uniforms?
With Adidas taking over as the official jersey provider for the NHL this upcoming season, there are reports that upwards of 13 teams will show off new designs in some capacity (this includes the new Vegas team, so expect to see 12 redesigns plus the new expansion team).
According to SportsLogos.net, the Colorado Avalanche could be one of those teams with a new jersey design. Nothing is official, but Chris Creamer speculates that we could see them get rid of the horrendous black and white piping on the current Reebok jerseys, and he hopes to see some sort of rebirth of the “mountain range style waist striping”.
This goes hand-in-hand with the rumors of the Avs switching primary logos from the traditional “A” logo to their newer “C” inside the mountain logo that has been used on their alternate jerseys the past few seasons. There have been rumors going on for a while that the switch to this logo as the primary has slowly been taking place, as the team and broadcast partners have been using the logo more and more since revealing it about two years ago.
Will the Avalanche be switching from this classic logo…
To this as their new primary logo… ?
These are only two questions heading into quite frankly the most interesting offseason since the team came to Colorado in 1995…
