Avalanche buy out remainder of Francois Beauchemin’s contract

The first mystery of the Avalanche offseason has been solved, as Joe Sakic has officially bought out the remainder of 37-year old defenseman Francois Beauchemin’s contract.

Rumors and hope surrounding the potential buy-out had been surfacing since the middle of this past season, and it all had to do with the No-Movement Clause in his contract. Because of the NMC, the Avs were going to have to be forced to use one of their protection spots for the upcoming Expansion Draft on Beauchemin. Now with him bought out, Colorado can use that spot on a younger player as they look to rebuild around the young pieces they currently have.

Beauchemin was headed into the final year of the 3-year deal he signed with the Avalanche, worth a total of $13.5 million. His annual cap hit was $4.5 million, and that will still count against the Avs’ cap this season.

In two years with Colorado, Beauchemin played in 163 games (only missing one game) and scored 13 goals and 39 assists for a total of 52 points. He will noe be an unrestricted free agent this summer, free to sign with whatever team wants his services.
